The King Arts Complex and American Electric Power present Color Struck, a nationally toured production, written and produced by Donald E Lacy, Jr. Lacy wants to bring deep issues that touch human experience to the theater, particularly on the subject of race in America. His new one- man show, "Colorstruck," opens Friday April 24th with a matinee and Saturday April 25th with evening performance at the King Art Complex Pythian Theater.
Color Struck examines the differences and misunderstandings among different races that lead to racism and racist behavior. The inspiration for the show stretches back to 1964 when a 4-year-old Lacy began preschool. "We were called colored back then" he says "and one of the other youngsters said I wasn't colored because I was a lighter-skinned persuasion. That's one of my first recollections. I went home and talked to my mother about it. I didn't know there was a strata of race the existed in my community."
Even within his family where there was a range of skin tones from light to dark. Lacy was derided for his lighter skin. Jokes about his resemblance to the mailman were common. "That kind of thing reverberated on my consciousness - why are people so preoccupied with someone's skin color and race?" Lacy says. "this was the late 60's and early 70's when the black -consciousness movement and black panthers and assassinations of Dr. King and RFK were all happening".
