Appearing as part of Queens College's Year of China, pianist and native New Yorker Joel Fan welcomes musicians Yang Wei on pipa and Xiao-Dong Wei on erhu for a performance of Chinese traditional classics and folk songs, along with works by Piazzolla and Brahms. A world music innovator, Fan's collaboration with Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble has led to appearances at Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center and on Late Night with David Letterman.

In January 2006 Fan recorded his first solo album World Keys: Virtuoso Piano Music which was released the following June under Reference Recordings. The album includes pieces from all over the globe by both famous composers such as Prokofiev, Liszt, and Schumann, as well as lesser known ones from countries not usually associated with piano music, for example Halim El-Dabh (Egypt), Qigang Chen (China), Peteris Vasks (Latvia), and A. Adnan Saygun (Turkey).
